The mechanism of kidney transamidinase reduction in vitamin E-deficient rabbits.

چکیده
A recent investigation by Van Pilsum and Wahman (1) revealed low kidney transamidinase activities in vitamin Edeficient rabbits. One logical mechanism to explain this finding is suggested by the observation that dietary creatine depresses kidney transamidinase activity in rats (2, 3). I f the creatinuria of vitamin E deficiency depresses glycocyamine synthesis by kidney transamidinase while creatine synthesis in the whole animal is normal (1) or increased (4, 5), it would indicate that feedback depression of kidney transamidinase by creatine does not regulate creatine synthesis. It thus seems important to establish the cause of the reduced kidney transamidinase activity in vitamin E-deficient rabbits. Accordingly, we have investigated the mechanism of kidney transamidinase depression by vitamin E deficiency. The evidence obtained supports the hypothesis that the depression is secondary to excessive creatine excretion. A direct effect of vitamin E on transamidinase could not be demonstrated.

Creatine and creatinine in the carcass and urine of normal and vitamin E-deficient rabbits.
Morgulis and Spencer (1) reported that the urinary excretion of creatine was increased in vitamin E-deficient rabbits and that there was no decrease in the urinary creatinine excretion. Goettsch and Brown (2) found that the muscle content of creatine was decreased in vitamin E-deficient rabbits which indicated the creatinuria was at least in part the result of a nonretention or nonutilization o...
متن کاملPREVENTIVE EFFECTS OF VITAMIN B12 AND FOLIC ACID IN METHANOL-INDUCED RETINOPATHY IN AN ANIMAL MODEL
In order to identify the effects of vitamin B 12 and folic acid in reducing methanolinduced retinopathy, ERG waves were compared before and after methanol intoxication in rabbits. In this study 34 rabbits were divided into 4 groups. All groups received 4 g/kg of methanol intraperitoneally. In addition, the second, third and fourth groups received vitamin B 12 injection, oral folic acid and ...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Vitamin E and/or Quercetin Co-Supplementation on the Morphology of Kidney in Cyclosporine A-Treated Rats
Background: Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a nephrotoxic immunosuppressive drug. Antioxidants might attenuate its toxicity. In the present study, the effects of vitamin E and quercetin on the morphology of kidney in CsA-treated rats were investigated. Methods: Six groups of rats were used in this gavage feeding study either for 4 or 8 weeks. Groups 1 and 2 received either olive oil or 25% ethanol in o...

متن کاملAbnormalities of iron metabolism and erythropoiesis in vitamin E-deficient rabbits.
Rabbits fed a vitamin E-deficient diet developed severe muscular dystrophy in 3-4 wk, but they did not become anemic. Nevertheless, reticulocyte counts increased in deficient rabbits (3.2%) compared to control rabbits (0.9%), and erythroid hyperplasia was evident in the bone marrow. Comparing deficient rabbits to controls, the plasma iron concentration was lower (134.4 versus 206.6 microgram/dl...
